WHAT ARE DATABASES?

The library databases listed here provide access to the world’s published periodical literature, plus some other types of publications (eg reference books).

Search options
A comprehensive range of search options allow relevant material to be located quickly. A topic KEYWORD search is the most popular but searches can also be conducted by AUTHOR NAME, PUBLICATION NAME, etc. Results can be narrowed by specifying PUBLICATION DATE or range of dates.

FULLTEXT DATABASES

Fulltext databases are just that – the entire text of the published item is retrievable online, sometimes including illustrations. The user can save them to disk, print them out or email them (please note that the extent of copying is regulated by copyright legislation).

INDEXING DATABASES

Indexing databases list and describe the contents of the literature covered by the service. Publication details are retrievable plus in most cases an abstract [brief description of the content].
Fulltext of articles can be obtained - see below.

OBTAINING LOGINS

In most cases our databases must be accessed by clicking on the "Login" button on the Information Centre homepage, and entering the E-Resources login.

Library staff can give you the current E-Resources login, or you can email a request for a login to this site, quoting your student number or enrolment details.

Please note that the NCI E-resources login is NOT the same as your personal login, it is a separate login.

NB to obtain a login you must be a currently enrolled student at a campus of North Coast Institute

By logging in as described above, you can get directly into most databases by clicking on the link provided. For other databases, additional logins are required. Further information is available online, after you log in.

OBTAINING FULLTEXT

Fulltext of most items cited but not supplied in fulltext in our databases is available on request (up to a reasonable limit). Allow a minimum of 7 days for this service. The material may be available as a photocopy or in electronic form.

OTHER DATABASES

Internet and CD-ROM databases not listed here may be available in your campus library or your local public library. Print indexes with similar coverage may also be available.
