When you find a book that has the information you want, please ask us if we have it in the library. If we don’t, we will purchase a copy for the library.

( 3 / 692 )On Friday August 22 the library celebrated Daffodil Day, a very important fund raising occasion for the Cancer Council. Kerry and Jill dressed in yellow, as did some of the staff and students.
Morning tea in the library consisted of yellow food and was supplied by the TAFE Canteen, Kerry and Jill. Many people made generous donations which will be sent to the Cancer Council later this week.
Thank you all those who wore yellow, came to our morning tea and/or made donations to this very worthy cause.

This week, I have chosen Revolution is not a dinner party , a novel by Ying Chang Compestine. This powerful novel was inspired by the author’s own experiences as a child in the Cultural Revolution, and is for adults and young adults alike.
Nine year old Ling leads a comfortable life until Comrade Li, one of Chairman Mao’s political officers, moves into a room in her family’s apartment. When Ling's father is taken away by the Red Guard as an enemy of the people, she and her strict, perfectionist mother have to build a relationship to survive. In the ensuing four years, Ling experiences loss, hunger, betrayal, fear and confusion. Although life is very hard, Ling faces it with all the courage and dignity that she can muster.
This novel has won many fiction awards, and is well worth reading!

Next Friday 22 August is Daffodil Day, a major fund raising day for the Cancer Council.
Cancer is a horrific disease which has claimed the lives of many Australians, young and old. I'm sure most of us have lost family members or friends to cancer.
Grafton TAFE Library staff are asking all campus staff and students to wear a yellow item of clothing to TAFE next Friday. It could be a shirt, socks, hat, hair ribbon - anything yellow. And please come to the library during the day and make a donation to the Cancer Council.

The website of the week isn’t so much a website as an article which appears on several websites. It is called When Wikipedia won’t cut it: 25 online sources for reliable, researched facts. This article was written by Jessica Hupp and published in February 2008.
Although the article was written in USA, it lists links that could be useful to students right across the world. Some of the links are: Virtual Reference Shelf, Internet Public Library, WWW Virtual Library, Mathematica and Ask Oxford.
Jessica says “although Wikipedia [an online encyclopedia where anyone can add entries]is a great place to find information, it’s subject to incomplete citations, biased views and inaccuracies. And when you absolutely have to have undisputable facts, that’s not good enough.”
It’s very American, but I found plenty of Australian content. The other disadvantage is that there is an occasional broken link. All in all, though, it is a fascinating gateway to a wealth of knowledge.
