Hello everybody,
As some of you know, I am a big fan of the game of Rugby League. So when this book arrived at the library last week, I was keen to read it and to make it our first Book of the Week for term 4.
The book is The two of me, written by Andrew “Joey” Johns, who has been described as one of the greatest players in the history of the game. At the beginning he explains that he suffers from bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) and that he is deeply embarrassed by and ashamed of some of his past behaviours. One of his aims in writing his story is to encourage people who suffer from this mental illness to seek help. He loved playing football, but he hated the public recognition that came with sporting success.
We learn that Andrew is a voracious reader, that he appreciates art, loves to visit museums, is a good cook and that surfing brings him a lot of relaxation and enjoyment.
He tells the story of his life in a very readable, conversational style. The book also includes comments by team mates, coaches and other sportsmen.
Andrew’s prodigious talent and footballing feats are in stark contrast to his struggles to come to terms with his fame and his mental illness. He is a likeable, strongly family oriented and humble character and his book is well worth reading.
