MEMORY
STRATEGIES - PRACTICE ACTIVITIES
Number/Rhyme (Peg word) system
This system is great for remembering lists of
things in order. Firstly, you link each number to a rhyming
word:
1 = bun 2 = shoe 3 = tree 4 = door 5 = hive 6 = sticks 7 = heaven 8 = gate 9 = vine 10 = hen
etc.
Then, you relate each thing you have to remember
to the word (and number). Make sure you make the thing you
imagine as silly as possible…it's easier to remember it that
way!!

Activity
For example, you want to remember
the five main exports of the small nation of Bandahar.
The exports, in order, are: clothing, gold, wheat,
cars, uranium. You can use the system like this:
1 = bun = clothing
Think about a huge bun wearing
a shirt and tie.
2 = shoe = gold
Think about a huge, solid gold
shoe!
3 = tree = wheat
Think about a beautiful, lush tree
with sheaves of wheat instead of branches
4 = door = cars
Think of a great big roller door
with large numbers of cars driving through.
5 = hive = uranium
Think of a big beehive with lots
of radioactive, glowing bees swarming out.
Now, take a little time to imagine
each of these things. Wait 15 minutes, then see
if you can write down the exports in the correct
order. Then check your answers.
