referencing

Referencing, also referred to as citing, is how you acknowledge the sources of your information.

To "cite" is to point to evidence, authority or proof.

When you used your reading lists to find information in Section 2, you used citations. Now you'll write your own, to describe the information resources you found.

To cite correctly you need to collect and assemble details of where your information came from.

methods of referencing

Referencing is done in various ways.

One commonly used system is called the Author/Date System. It provides a consistent way to:

  • Refer to a source of information within the text of your assignment.
  • Include a quotation from another author.
  • Provide a bibliography or list at the end of the assignment which is a complete list of sources referred to.

The Author/Date System in also known as the Harvard system. You can read more about it and see examples by downloading this Referencing Guide (MS Word document, 546 Kb).

Rod, Community Services teacher says:

"I prefer a different system of referencing.

When I set an assignment I tell my students what's expected. There's information about different referencing systems on the internet."
