1. In Text Referencing

Referring to an information source within the text of your assignment is called In Text Referencing.

This is where you acknowledge an idea by placing the author's name and the year of publication at the point in your essay where you refer to it.

Example:

Freud (1933) was the first to introduce the theory that...

2. Providing a Bibliography or Reference List

You also need to provide a list of sources at the end of your work. This is known as a bibliography or reference list.

There is a difference between the two terms:

A reference list is a list of the sources you have directly quoted or taken ideas from (paraphrased).

A bibliography is an alphabetical list, by author, of all the material you consulted regardless of whether you directly quoted or paraphrased from it.
