Earlier in the tutorial, you learned how to list keywords, related words and synonyms.
If you haven't completed this part of the tutorial, you may like to do so now.
These words, known as search terms, are what you will use to search for information. You may be able to combine some of your terms, by using AND or OR to make your search more successful.
using "AND"
AND can be used to combine keywords. For example, with the keywords in our sample topic:
violence television juvenile crime - you could search on violence and television.
The search results would include materials with both words (violence and television) appearing in them. This would limit the number of results, to items relevant to your topic - indicated by the green area in the diagram.
using "OR"
OR can be used to combine related terms and synonyms*.
For example, in our sample topic, youth was identified
as another term for juvenile. You could combine these
terms by using OR to make the search term youth or
juvenile.
The search results will include materials containing
either of these words youth and juvenile,
or both of them. This will increase the total number
of results - indicated by the green area in the diagram.
