catalogue search results

When you have used the library catalogue and located an item, you need to evaluate its usefulness. With practice, this can be done quite quickly!

Here are some things you need to do:

  • Read any information on the cover of the book (or video), or the Introduction section of the book.
  • Look over the Contents pages
  • Look in the book's Index for your specific topic. Are there a lot of page references to what you are interested in?
  • Check the date of publication. Is it recent? Does this matter to you?

*For more information on evaluating information, follow the "Evaluating information" link from the Information Centre home page.

tip from your librarian

"If the item you found is not useful, browse along the library shelf to see if there are others which may be better. Items on the same subject are shelved together."
